The Thinker at OUE Bayfront

There is a reproduction of Rodin's The Thinker at the OUE Bayfront building in Marina Bay, in front of the Fullerton Bay Hotel. I have walked by several times on weekends, and today stopped to make some images. This black & white version is my favorite.

Clear Skies Return to Singapore

We woke to wonderfully clear skies here in Singapore yesterday morning, which is a most welcome relief following the terrible haze that wafted over from the burning in Sumatra off and on over the last two weeks. During the worst of it, the 3-hour PSI hit 401, and as I write this, it has come down to 18. Even better, for the first time in a long time, I don’t even see any tinge of brown along the horizon.

Attached are two images to document the improvement: the first in the warm morning light of Saturday looking toward the cargo port, and the second from this afternoon, of the clouds above the Marina Bay Sands.

Essential Eames Exhibition at ArtScience Museum in Singapore

The Essential Eames exhibition opened at the ArtScience Museum here in Singapore yesterday, and my wife and I happened to be nearby, so we decided to have a look. To my delight, photography is allowed in all but one of the galleries, and I had the 8-15mm fisheye lens on my DSLR, which made for some enjoyable compositions.

Hazy Super Moon

The evening of the full Super Moon on June 23 was quite a bit hazier than the day before, but I decided to try a few images anyway. I set up the tripod on the veranda in advance and was ready when the moon appeared above Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1 and the Marina Bay Residences beyond at about 8:15 PM.

The Night Before Super Moon 2013

The haze from Sumatra began to clear during the afternoon yesterday, and by 6 PM the PSI was down to 73--the Singapore Air Force  even conducted practice for the National Day flyover above Marina Bay. I remembered that the next day June 23, will be Super Moon 2013, and wondered aloud if we would be able to see it. My wife looked out just in time to see the moon beginning to appear above the Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1. I rushed out to the veranda and set up a tripod to capture some images of the waxing gibbous moon (96.7%).

Singapore's Historic Haze

The air quality has been terrible in Singapore this week, setting new records for levels of pollution, reminding me of a visit I made to Beijing in April 2011. The cause is intentional burning of forests and plantation land in Riau Province, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia.

The attached image was taken at 8:36 AM this morning, looking out toward the Marina Bay Sands, which normally is clearly visible at all times of the day and night, and a favorite photographic subject over the last 4 plus years.

Singapore uses the Pollution Standards Index (PSI), and the 3-hour average reported at 9 AM this morning was 323, down from the all-time record of 401 at Noon yesterday.

A lot of people are wearing masks, including the recommended N95 type, which I received at work, to cut down the impact of the smoky stench, which was declared 'hazardous' yesterday. Organized outdoor activities like running events, etc., are being cancelled this weekend around Singapore.

Lowe & Lewis-Jones’s Wonderful Book on the 1953 Everest Ascent

I grew up in a household of avid readers, and am very thankful for the early and enthusiastic encouragement to spend time with books.

Travel and adventure books became a favorite, starting with the iconic yellow covers of the National Geographic magazine, and I remember the compelling stories and photographs of the first U.S. climbers to reach the summit in 1963. I suspect it was while reading the October 1963 Geographic article that I learned about the 1953 climb by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

I was immediately interested when I saw the book review in the Financial Times in early May, “The Conquest of Everest” by George Lowe and Huw Lewis-Jones to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first ascent by Hillary and Tenzing.

George Lowe’s photographs of the climb are truly special and alone are worth the price, but the writing by Lowe and several others adds an additional quality to the experience of time spent with this book. I especially enjoyed the vignettes, including the one about how Lowe and Hillary first met on a bus on the way to a climb at Mount Cook, as well as the description of the reason there is no photo of Hillary standing on the summit of Everest: he felt it wasn’t the right time and place to show Tenzing how to use the camera.

Later in May, my wife and I were on an afternoon walk through the Marina Bay Sands here in Singapore, and I spotted an unusual window display at the Bally shop highlighting the 60th anniversary of the first Everest ascent and I wondered what was the connection. I returned later to take the photo included with this post, and after a quick web search, learned that indeed Bally did make the special-order reindeer skin boots that Tenzing wore to the summit.

Moonrise at 3:06 AM

I woke up earlier than I intended this morning, probably due to the high level of noise from the music and dance event over at The Meadows next to the Gardens by the Bay. The good news is that being up that early allowed me to notice the moonrise just in time to capture a few quick frames before the moon rose too far above the horizon here in Marina Bay.

I didn't immediately recognize the moon and that it might be rising at that position, and first consulted the Photographer's Ephemeris iOS app to be sure, before quickly grabbing the 7D and heading to the veranda.

Smoky Singapore Sunrise - Via Sumatra

The air here in Singapore has been very smoky since about mid-week, and was especially so on April 18, when I captured this image from my veranda (Canon 7D + 200mm f/2.8). News reports explained this morning that the recent haze is from fires in the Indonesian province of Riau on the island of Sumatra.

Singapore Extreme 40 Catamaran Racing Act 2

This weekend the Extreme Sailing Series came to Singapore for the second series of races. The race course was in the corner of Marina Bay, near our apartment, and I was able to take images both from my veranda, as well as from ground level along the bay. The winds were best described as 'very light', which kept the racing more on the mild, rather than the extreme side, but I certainly enjoyed the opportunity to photograph these fascinating boats and their crew.

Noble Jade Nudging Ever Urban Into Port

There are cargo ships coming and going at every hour of the day, it seems, in Singapore, one of the busiest container ports in the world. I looked out in time to see the tugboat Noble Jade gently nudging the giant cargo ship Ever Urban into port. You can get an idea of the enormity of the ship by looking at how small the man in the bright orange jacket is at the extreme starboard side of the lower level on the stern.

Stormy Friday

I woke up to a thunder storm here in Marina Bay, Singapore on Friday morning. By sunrise, the rain and lightning had stopped, leaving behind dramatic clouds, and still brown air.

1st Yellowstone Visit - 7 Years Ago

My wife and I made our first visit to Yellowstone National Park in March 2006, shortly before the end of the winter season there. We rode the Bombardier B12 snowcat from West Yellowstone into the Old Faithful Lodge for a couple nights. The snowcoach made stop along the way so we could admire the wildlife and the scenery (the vertical shot of the trees in the snow in the Yellowstone Gallery on this site was made on one such stop, by standing up through the open hatch on top of the snowcoach).

The temperatures were as low as -23F during our stay, but we enjoyed going out with our cameras in the mornings. We have since made two more visits to Yellowstone and have become loyal enthusiasts.
