Singapore Sunrise

We were treated to an especially interesting sunrise this morning at Marina Bay Singapore, with wonderful colors developing about 40 minutes before the sun appeared above the horizon. I made this image about 7:30 AM with a 200mm prime lens on the Canon 5DMk2.

Inside Marina Bay Sands

There is a skating rink on the ground floor at one end of the Marina Bay Sands complex. My wife and I enjoy walking through the complex on weekends, observing all the visitors and the shops. On a recent weekend, I snapped this photo of the several levels above the skating rink with the Sony RX100.

Future Development at Marina Bay

We walked to the Urban Gallery on the way to Marina Bay Sands this evening and took a look at the architecture models โ€‹of the future development of Marina Bay. We could see that the current open spaces next to both the hotel and the convention centre will be occupied by new buildings eventually. On our walk back, we saw an egret out hunting for frogs in the temporary pond after the rains this afternoon, which made us ponder the amazing persistence of nature in such a heavily urban environment.

Chinese New Year at Marina Bay

I went out walking last night with my wife and made a circuit of Marina Bay, stopping to make photos along the way. The CNY festival was underway along the Esplanade and out on the floating football pitch. Attached is a favorite image from the outing, showing some of the crowd and the setup.

Gardens by the Bay Before Sunrise

I walked over to the Gardens by the Bay while it was still dark this morning and made a few images of the SuperTrees and the backside of the Marina Bay Sands. I didn't see any other photographers out shooting this morning, which meant I had my pick of  favorite vantage points.

The image posted here (made with the 40mm pancake lens) is of the main grove of SuperTrees, showing the suspended walkway.

Lobby of Marina Bay Sands Hotel

The UK artist Antony Gormley has a permanent installation (Drift) suspended from the ceiling inside the lobby of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore. This image is taken from the passage way connecting the Marina Bay Sands Shoppes, the Hotel, and the Gardens By The Bay. [Note: I replaced the originally-posted version of this image, after correcting the color balance.]

A Visit to Meiji Shrine on January 5

We walked to Meiji Shrine on the morning of January 5, part of an annual ritual in Tokyo (and at other shrines across the country) to make New Year wishes. Even though the rush of people from New Year's Day had passed, it was still very crowded. This image shows the queue of people at the counters to buy amulets.

After The New Year's Eve Smoke Cleared

Although I live in Marina View Singapore and have a good view of the

Marina Bay Sands from my apartment, the New Year's fireworks are set off just out of view from my balcony. As the smoke began to clear, a few minutes after midnight, I captured this image to share, to commemorate the start of the New Year 2013.

Preparing Meiji Shrine for the New Year

One of my favorite times to visit Meiji Shrine in Tokyo is in the last week of December when workmen are busy setting the ramps and guideposts for the multitude of visitors that will visit starting New Year's Eve and continuing through much of January. I made these two images on December 25, 2004, when I was living within walking distance of the shrine.

ArtScience Museum Construction: Before & After

Having lived here in Marina Bay since August 2008, it has been interesting to watch, and occasionally photograph the nearby construction. Yesterday I had a look at some of the construction images I had made and selected a few to add to my online galleries.

I realized that I didn't have an image from the same spot, with the same lens after completion, so went out early this morning and made one to complete the 'Before & After' comparison.

Before: ArtScience Museum and Marina Bay Sands complex under construction in December 2009.

After: ArtScience Museum and Marina Bay Sands Complex after mid-2010 completion (this image taken December 2012).

Tilt Shift Lens

I was inspired by a fellow photographer to acquire a tilt shift lens and am really enjoying the learning process. Below is one of the first images I made with this lens, showing the skyline of the financial center in Marina Bay, Singapore.

Stormy Day in Singapore

I was working from home yesterday and looked out about 3:30 PM and noticed a dramatic squall line out towards the Straits of Malacca. Of course, I quickly grabbed the Sony RX100 and dashed out on the veranda to document the sky.
