A friend called last Saturday evening and asked if I was interested in taking some photos of a touring Chinese dance troupe that was performing at the Raffles City shopping complex here in Singapore. Of course, I was keen to give a try, and he offered to save a good spot in front of the stage so off I went. There were quite a few other photographers waiting when I arrived and we chatted with some of them while waiting for the show to begin. The 5DMk2 still seems to be a bit of a novelty, and attracted a fair amount of attention amongst the guys standing nearby. I made the mistake of not shooting in shutter priority (or manual) mode, so the shutter speed was sometimes as slow as 1/60s which is not fast enough for dance. Thus, most of these images are less action shots and more the performers poses at the end of segments of their program. I definitely need a bit more practice with this type of photography. After the 30-minute show my friend and I went into the food court for drinks and it we noticed several members of the crew had quickly changed into street clothes, but left their makeup on and came in for a quick meal--an interesting contrast from their appearance on stage. It would have been fun to have had some images from there as well. This coming Sunday evening (January 25) is Chinese New Year's Eve (i.e., lunar new year), which ought to provide some more colorful photo opportunities.
